Love, Christianity, Jesus and Salvation

It seems like Christianity and Jesus are increasingly under attack. What's going on? What we'll be looking at is what happens when Christians use human wisdom to interpret the Bible, twisting scripture away from its intended message. This blog is dedicated to using Scripture itself to interpret and help us understand Scripture. You are welcome to add your comments and thoughts. Other viewpoints are welcome. Disagreements are welcome.

Micah 6:8

"The LORD has already told you what is good, and this is what he requires: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." (NLT)

How do we know what is right so that we can do right? We need to turn to the word of God. It is not our judgement that tells us what is right. Remember the final words of condemnation in the book of Judges:

"...so the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes." (Judges 21:25)

We may desire that something be right, for whatever reasons we personally have, but the truth is found in the Scriptures. For example, we may desire that gay marriage be right, because we have friends who have homosexual feelings. But God tells us to do what is right, not what we desire to be right.

Yes, our desires may match what the Bible says. The problem is that we are fallen. We are not perfect, nor are our desires perfect. Because we are fallen and we make mistakes, what we think is right may not be. We must always look first to the Word of God (the Bible) as the guide to tell us whether what we desire is right--always being careful to understand that our interpretation of God's Word may also be wrong. We are fallen so we do not have a perfect understanding of God's Word.

So what do we do? Who can we trust to help us interpret the Bible?

There is only one answer. The only one we can trust to help us intrepret the Bible is God. Only Scripture can interpret Scripture. When there is something in the Bible you don't understand, turn to other sections in the Bible that discuss the same subject. If there is a word you don't understand, turn to other places in the Bible where that word is used. Use God's Word to help you understand God's Word so that you can truly obey God and do what is rght.
