Genesis 1:1
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
The first 11 chapters of Genesis are probably some of the most important chapters in the Bible. This one verse of the Bible is packed with information:
What is this verse saying?
- There was a beginning.
- It says God created.
- It says God created in the beginning. That means God must have already existed before "the beginning". It means God actually created the beginning.
- It says God created the "heavens and the earth". That's a phrase that refers to everything in the physical universe. But note that it says "heavens" which is plural. That means there must be more than one heaven. At this point we can't say what this means or what a heaven is, but we know there are heavens (plural) and one earth (singular).
- The Hebrew word translated as "created" is "bara". This word is interesting in that it's full meaning is "created by God from nothing". This word is only used when talking about God creating from nothing. That means the heavens and earth were created from nothing.
- It says God created. This is singular indicating there is only one God.
This verse does not say "the Gods created" (plural gods), so it was only one divine being who created in the beginning.
Nor does this verse say "one of the Gods created", which would indicate there was more than one God at the beginning.
Here are a few things we learn about God from just this short 10 word verse.
+ He existed before the beginning, since He was there at the beginning to create.
+ He is able to create from nothing.
+ He is very powerful because He was able to create the heavens and the earth.
+ He has knowledge, abilities, vastness and power beyond our comprehension, since He created the heavens and earth.
+ There is one God.
